Note on the monographs. Twelve monographs were published between 1996 and 2000. They included three surveys of project types (on Monash Bridges extant in 1998; on tanks and silos both built and projected; and on unbuilt Monier arch projects) - also nine 'dossiers' on individual Monier arch bridges (all built, and most extant). Much of the content can now (2007) be seen on this web site, and links are provided below. The bulk of the material not reproduced consists of my brief precises of relevant correspondence and newspaper articles, listed in date order to form a 'Timeline'. (This web site contains a few short examples. See e.g. the second part of the Grant St Bridge page.) The monographs also included rough maps showing the location of the bridges and A4 reproductions of original engineering drawings. Only a few copies of the monographs were prepared. See Availability below.

Note on the conference papers. Five were presented between 1996 and 2001. Three are reproduced on this web site with added notes to compensate for the brevity of the originals. The other two summarised material now covered by individual pages on this web site, so have not been reproduced.

Our report contains a lengthy introduction explaining the background, and for each bridge, a photograph, a brief local history, and technical facts. This three-span Monier arch bridge started Monash & Anderson in the direction that shaped Monash's engineering career until 1914. It was designed and probably built by the Sydney firm of Carter Gummow & Co.

Designed by J. T. N. Anderson in conjunction with Carter Gummow & Co, this was the first Monier arch in Victoria to bear traffic. A dispute over contract payments resulted in severe financial difficulties for Monash & Anderson. Volume 2 contains a transcript of the court proceedings. As at Nov 2007, this has not been reproduced in this web site.

Bendigo. Monier arch bridges.

Monash & Anderson designed and built eight bridges for the city, mainly over the channelised Bendigo Creek. Most are still standing.

Bendigo. King's Bridge.

One of the eight Bendigo bridges, originally built with a single 28.5m span which collapsed under test. Our report recounts the history of its design and construction; the collapse and its investigation; and the design and construction of the present two-span bridge.

Mansfield. Monier Arch Bridge over Ford's Creek.

This was a small structure designed solely by Monash who also oversaw construction from his base in Melbourne. Photographs in the report show him on the construction site and at the opening ceremony.

A late Monier arch bridge initially designed by Monash's assistant P. T. Fairway. The spandrel walls are probably of reinforced concrete, a notable departure from the mass concrete and brick of previous bridges.

Availability

The monographs were thought to be a specialist interest, so were published in small runs (20 to 30 copies) and sent to organisations likely to be interested in the preservation of John Monash structures, and to a few individuals and public libraries. Records that we generated while employed at Monash University have been transferred from the Department of Civil Engineering to the Monash University Archives. These include the originals of the 'Dossiers'. Please contact the Archives regarding availability.
