Introduction to 'People' Page

Civil Engineering is carried out by teams of people. Although our study is centered on John Monash, the story of his engineering prior to WW1 touches on the careers of many individuals, including colleagues, municipal engineers, contractors, foremen, lawyers, architects, etc. etc. Their appearance in the Monash records may be of interest to descendants and historians. The notes are not meant to constitute a biography - merely to give some idea of each individual's activities in relation to Monash's work. This web page is being constantly revised as coverage extends to more of JM's projects.

Key Personalities.

Figures central to this story are John Monash (of course), his initial partner J T N Anderson, managing director John Gibson and backer David Mitchell. The Works Manager Alex Lynch played an important role from the early days. F M Gummow provided the licence for the Monier system in Victoria, financial backing and advice and encouragement in business matters. W J Baltzer provided JM with essential technical support from Sydney. P T Fairway, J A Laing, and H G Jenkinson became JM's principal engineering assistants, the latter taking over the Adelaide office. W W Harvey played a lesser, but still important role, and preceded Jenkinson as Resident Engineer at Adelaide. Other engineering assistants included J S Gregory and S J Lindsay. (More on staffing.) A number of figures external to the organisation, in both the public and private sectors, played major roles in fostering the development of reinforced concrete in Victoria. Perhaps the chief of these was Carlo Catani.
